Little Anchor will be playing at Pianos in the Lower East Side on Thursday, June 17th. Come check us out, we’re on before Anni Rossi. We go on at 8, so be there on time! $8 bucks at the door.
Thursday will see the release of the Sunland EP which features 5 awesome Alexa Cabellon originals. Alexa struggled with a suitable band name for a while and after multiple bad suggestions I can proudly say – I named this band! Woooo! Full band recording is in the near future – stay in touch! Awesome band emblem by Barclay Douglas.
To get you ready for the Thursday night gig, here is a clip of ‘Circles and Circles’ from our show at Glasslands last month.

Starkey, Anneka, Reso – Building the Beat for Mary Anne Hobbs

Just came across this (after having recently heard of Starkey) and I think it’s pretty amazing. Philly producer Starkey is put to the challenge of creating a track in two hours for Mary Anne Hobbs in a Radio 1 special called “Building the Beat.” With the assistance of vocalist Anneka, percussionist Reso, and some samples, Starkey had to write/record/produce the entire track within the time constraints. The track is pretty cool but I moreso think it’s amazing that they came out with a bumpin’ song within the limitations.

Also, just for added awesomeness, here is Slugabed’s awesome remix of Starkey’s single featuring Anneka, ‘Stars.’

The Morning Benders – Excuses filmed by “Yours Truly”

I’ve been hearing a lot about Californian band The Morning Benders, particularly because their upcoming album, Big Echo, will feature co-production from Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. I heard one track called “Promises,” that, although it sounded pretty good, just sounded a little too much like Grizzly Bear. On the other hand, the following track, “Excuses” is awesome, has a nice original sound and the video is super well produced. Lead singer Christopher Chu’s voice is beautiful. Give ‘em a listen. Very cute, if I do say so…

Donny McCaslin Kicking Some Serious Ass in Germany

It amazes me that I can now find HD concert footage of my favorite musicians. This is Donny McCaslin at the 2008 Jazzbaltica festival in Salzau, Germany with an all-star band featuring Dave Douglas, David Binney, Ben Monder, Scott Colley and Adam Cruz. McCaslin studied with George Garzone, my teacher, at Berklee.
Listen to Donny McCaslin and Dave Douglas tear it up on “Descarga”:
McCaslin recently released an album in August called Declaration, I encourage you to get it.
And because Ben Monder is my favorite guitarist, some epic Monder shredding from the same show after the jump…
Little Dragon Live @ Le Poisson Rouge

Yukimi Nagano kicking ass
I fell in love with Little Dragon’s debut album in 2007. An amazing mix of soul, house, electronic and pop music. Has anyone noticed Sweden keeps popping out the sweetest bands?
I was initially a little disappointed with Little Dragon’s second album, Machine Dreams. I found the album to feel a little more stiff than their first, and frankly, a little boring (still, there are some amazing songs to be found here).
That being said, Little Dragon’s show at Le Poisson Rouge mainly featured songs from Machine Dreams and live, the songs sounded, well, alive! While an encore was expected, I didn’t think that they would keep kicking ass for almost an extra half hour. Yukimi Nagano is the most badass performer I have seen in over a year. She’s got an amazing voice, she can dance, and she makes you want to move. Yukimi Nagano is just fucking cool.
They are amazing live, so do yourself a favor and check them out the next time they’re in New York City. In the meantime…
