Chiddy Bang – Opposite of Adults Video

Check out soon-to-be-breakout hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang’s awesome video for their fun track ‘Opposite of Adults’ from their The Swelly Express mixtape. The single is set to be getting a proper release. The song itself is great and features a great beat that samples MGMT’s ‘Kids.’ The direction of this video is also really hip – very fresh. Check ‘em out.
This young group (read: Drexel freshmen) are bound for success. Looking forward to more! Thanks to Yue for the heads up on this one.

Here is a video we shot a couple weeks ago for Chiddy Bang, a group on the rise. These dudes are young and about to kill the game. Not to mention the directors Ben and Duncan (of Waverly Films) are the shit. Making this video was mad fun …. Dam-Funk – Rhythm Trax Vol. 4

Another genius recommendation from Ian is Dam-Funk’s Rhythm Trax Vol. 4
from Stones Throw Records. LA-based Dam-Funk sports a cool funk, hip-hop, electronic sound leaving you with some seriously bumpin’ beats. These tunes would fit right into a Mega Man X game. Dam-Funk’s newer album, Toeachizown, is cool and pretty different. Both worth checking out but Rhythm Trax is the one that (currently) does it for me. Argh, I just missed him at Brooklyn Bowl last night!

Lone – Ecstasy & Friends

Ecstasy & Friends is a pretty sweet album I stumbled on the other day- an example of something I listened to based purely on cool album art. Matt Cutler (known here as Lone) is a UK electronic musician that says his influences are bands like Boards of Canada and Madlib. Super cool, dance-y, hip-hoppy, electronic jams. Feels to me to be somewhere in between Machinedrum and Neon Indian.
Although I think a lot of the album sounds pretty similar, it has some fun badass beats. Would fit perfectly in the 1995 futuristic racing game, wipE’out’, anyone remember that game? (that game had awesome music) Anyway – check Lone out.

Somehow I missed this – Illa J doing his best Dilla

I remember being astounded at the striking resemblance of J Dilla’s younger brother, John Yancey, to the man himself, when I first saw the video for Dilla’s “Won’t Do” which dropped after his untimely passing. Don’t know how I ever missed this, because this came out in November of last year, but John Yancey put out an album entitled Yancey Brothers, entirely produced by Dilla and emcee’d by himself (as Illa J).
I heard one of the tracks while at a bar a few days ago and kept trying to figure out whether the track was Dilla or not. The production sounded spot on Dilla and even the voice was relatively similar. I asked the bartender what the music was, who in turn asked the DJ, and later slipped me a piece of paper saying ‘Illa J feat. Debi Nova.’
This track is super slick and you should give it a listen if you haven’t already, although I am already obviously way behind on this one. The beat is unquestionably Dilla gold and Illa J has some decent flowing. I always loved Dilla’s flow, he’s just so cool and unpretentious and Illa J delivers a very similar rhyming style.
I’m not so sure how I feel about the concept of Dilla’s brother rapping over Dilla beats. I enjoyed the album but I have yet to make a verdict on the fact that Illa’s flow is very reminiscent of Jay Dee- can’t tell. Does it irk me or doesn’t it?
Go get the whole album and you be the judge. I can’t stop listening to ‘Sounds Like Love’ and the album has some other gems as well. For die-hard Dilla fans the instrumental version of the album is also available.

And when you get another moment check out John Yancey playing Jay Dee in the “Won’t Do” video.
