Pies N’ Thighs – Williamsburg Soul Food

Fried chicken seems to be quite popular these days and Pies N’ Thighs just relocated to a spot more accessible to lazy hipsters at Driggs and South 4th st.
I managed to go with a group of 6 sometime shortly after their reopening and needless to say there was a pretty large line. We put our name down and noticed a nice little spot inside where we could escape waiting in the cold. About an hour passes and when we notice some unfamiliar faces getting seated, we ask how much longer the wait will be. It turns out they were only calling names outside (should have guessed), but we are quickly seated after this mishap.
Anyway, once we were sitting in our table looking at the wonderfully drawn menu we were pacified. The menu features “Box” specials all in the reasonable price range of $10. The general consensus was to get the Fried Chicken Box or the Carolina Pulled Pork Box.

The Fried Chicken Box comes with a biscuit and one side. Between us, everyone ended up with either the hushpuppies or mac & cheese as their sides. The mac is pretty good, nothing particularly amazing (although the tabasco sauce was a nice touch), but as always, it’s a great complement to fried chicken and rounds out a meal quite well. The hushpuppies were delicious, nice and crunchy and perfect with the tasty tartar sauce. The biscuit was kind of disappointingly dry, I think I had better at Popeye’s. The fried chicken is always perfect comfort food and it’s really hard to mess it up. Pies N’ Thighs fried chicken is super good with a nice crispy skin.

This sloppy piece up there is the Carolina Pulled Pork. The pulled pork sandwich was good, maybe a little bit dry, but definitely tasty (and a little messy). The cheese grits were AWESOME. A nice bit of cheddar and tabasco. Look at them! Oh so cheesy.
When it came to ordering our pies our waitress gave us some recommendations, only for us to find out that they were all sold out of the most interesting ones! We ended up ordering what was left, Coconut Cream pie which was actually quite good, but I was blinded by the fact that I would’ve preferred to have tried some of the other ones. Oh well, there is always a day for fried chicken and pies, so I’m sure I’ll be back again.
Didn’t want to get too long-winded, but Pies N’ Thighs is good, and a great spot if you’re searching for soul food in Williamsburg, but if you’re really in the mood for the real deal, head over to Mitchell’s Soul Food in Park Slope/Prospect Heights for some of the best fried chicken you’ve ever had.

Fette Sau = MEAT, MEAT, MEAT

Fette Sau is a German BBQ spot in Williamsburg and is an awesome place to get two things. Shit tons of meat (READ: LOTS OF PORK) and shit tons of beer. There is a lot of hype about this place but honestly, if you are a meat-lover, how can you not love this place?

Fette Sau is located in what seems to be a converted garage that functions somewhat like a beer garden with long picnic tables. The handles for the beer taps are butchers’ knives. Here you can get a nice assortment of pig and cow parts, sides and beers. There is one cutter so the line can get fairly long but the wait is well worth it.
Things to get: The berkshire pork belly is amazing here, super fatty! Both the beef short ribs and berkshire ribs are also very delicious. The sausage links are tasty and fun to eat with a bun and hot sauce. The burnt-end baked beans are by far my favorite side. They are amazingly flavorful and if you stick a whole lot of meat together with the beans, a bun and your choice of sauce it’s fantastic.

MMMM meat barrage!!! Fette Sau also offers a bunch of sauces, and their “spiciest” sauce, while not being mind boggling spicy, tastes REALLY GOOD and is a good addition to an already flavorful meal.
This is a fucking awesome place to come with friends for a serious meat and beer fest. Securing a table spot when this place is busy will prove quite a burden and you may have to stand around looking supremely awkward. Fette Sau usually has some sort of special meat every time I’ve been there, my co-worker says he once had duck here. Also, Fette Sau has a late night menu which I have unfortunately not yet tried. Their night menu consists of $3 dollar pulled pork sandwiches or sausage with a roll.
I haven’t been here in a while and looking back at these pictures is making me salivate… I also have yet to try Dinosaur BBQ which I’ve heard, from what I’ve heard, is better… I will have to find out for myself and hopefully sometime soon. In the meantime, I can vouch for the meaty glory that is Fette Sau.
Fette Sau is located at 354 Metropolitan Ave btwn Roebling and Havemeyer
Williamsburg’s Il Passatore serves Cheeseburger at Brunch

Il Passatore is an awesome little Italian restaurant in Williamsburg that I’ve been coming to for a while as a few friends live a short walk away. I came in yesterday to find that this place serves a hamburger on their brunch menu. I love burgers and wondered if an Italian restaurant would serve up a good one. When I asked the waiter how the burger was he responded, “It is ridiculous.” Il Passatore has never let me down with their other dishes and this response had me sufficiently intrigued.

This 8oz. beef burger is served with the usual fixings of lettuce, tomatoes and red onions with a small side salad and some roasted potatoes. I opted for cheddar cheese. I thought the roasted potatoes were a little uninteresting but they tasted pretty good. The burger, on the other hand, was fantastic. The cheddar was beautifully melted and the burger was cooked to perfection. I love when places actually give you medium-rare when you ask for it, I have had too many experiences asking for medium rare and receiving awkwardly burnt burgers. Il Passatore comes through with a wonderfully cheesy and juicy burger at $11. Definitely a good burger joint, who would’ve guessed it?
Some other recommendations from Il Passatore’s menu: The Cozze in Padella (mussels) are ridiculously good. The order comes with a large pile of mussels in a delicious spicy tomato sauce. My favorite pasta dish here is the Pappardelle Con Sugo Di Coda, pappardelle with oxtail ragu, mmm!) The Lombata Di Maiale (roasted pork loin stuffed with spinach and served with caramelized peaches).
Il Passatore is an amazing restaurant. As burgers go, I still think Dumont’s burger is better (and their fries are sooo good) but Il Passatore’s definitely ranks up there. They’ve got a great burger and their italian food is AMAZING- and an awesomely random find right off the Graham L train stop.
Il Passatore is located at 14 Bushwick Ave (between Devoe St & Metropolitan Ave) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
